Environmental emergencies: the importance of a fast and safe response
Response protocols and essential equipment to contain spills.

When an oil or chemical spill happens, every minute counts. The difference between a controlled incident and an environmental disaster lies, almost always, in the speed and technique of the first response.
Why time is critical
In aquatic environments, an oil slick spreads quickly under the action of wind and currents, multiplying the affected area and the cost of containment. Acting in the first minutes — isolating the source and surrounding the slick — limits damage to wildlife, navigation and port structures.
What the legislation requires
Law No. 9,966/2000 and IBAMA regulations require ports, terminals and platforms to maintain an Individual Emergency Plan (PEI), with resources, procedures and a trained team for immediate response to incidents. Having the plan on paper is not enough: it must be drilled and backed by fast activation means.
The pillars of an effective response
A safe operation combines a trained team, the right equipment and ready logistics. Essential resources include containment booms, which confine the slick; absorbent materials; recovery pumps and skimmers; and vacuum trucks to remove the product and the contaminated water.
As important as the equipment is the protocol: identify the product, protect people, contain, recover and properly dispose of the waste generated during cleanup — which is also classified as hazardous.
In an environmental emergency, improvisation is costly. A plan, training and fast mobilization are what separate a scare from irreversible loss.
After containment
Containing the spill is only the beginning. The recovered material must be transported and disposed of by a licensed company, and the affected area must be monitored and, if necessary, decontaminated. Every occurrence is recorded and reported to the competent authorities.
The readiness Clean Ship provides
Clean Ship maintains an environmental emergency response structure, with a team and equipment for spill response, containment in aquatic environments and disposal of the waste generated — supporting ports, terminals and vessels when speed makes all the difference.
